A day after scuffle during BJP national Vice-President Dilip Ghosh‘s campaign in Bhabanipur, Kolkata Police on Tuesday arrested eight persons in connection with the incident. A BJP delegation from New Delhi visited the ECI today and submitted a letter.

Police filed a suo moto case against unknown persons and mentioned that Dilip Ghosh, who was man-handled during the campaign, did not have any police permission for the programme and his security personnel had taken out his service revolver.

Till now, BJP and Trinamool Congress have not lodged any complaint in connection with the Bhabanipur incident.

On the last day of campaigning for the by-election in Bhabanipur on 27 September, Trinamool Congress and BJP workers clashed with each other in Jadubabu Bazar yesterday during the BJP’s national vice-president Dilip Ghosh’s campaign, who was man-handled.

A BJP worker, Mukund Jha, was hospitalised with a head injury in the state-run SSKM hospital, said party workers.

The eight people, who got arrested, were later released on bail, police sources said.

“This is complete eyewash by the police,” BJP spokesperson Shamik Bhattacharya said today, responding to the arrest.

Meanwhile, a BJP delegation met the ECI in New Delhi to submit a memorandum on Bhabanipur By-poll. This comes a day after the ruckus that broke out during campaigning in the Constituency.

The BJP delegation, which included Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Bhupender Yadav, urged the ECI with a host of proposals. They, in a letter, urged the Commission to deploy at least 40 CAPF companies in Bhabanipur Constituency, impose 144 on September 30, the day of polling and deploy micro observers, among other points. It should be ensured that “every booth, specially ward 77 and certain pockets of ward 82 and 63 has deployment of women security personnel to check identity of burqa clad women,” the letter mentioned.

The by-election in Bhabanipur is scheduled on September 30, where West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee will contest against BJp candidate Priyanka Tibrewal and CPI-M Srijib Biswas.
