Not mild variant: Britain reports first Omicron death
First country to report
Britain has reported the first death due to the Omicron variant. Prime minister Boris Johnson has said at least one person has died from the latest variant which is now spreading fast across many countries.
Hospitalisations due to Omicron
Johnson , during a visit to a vaccination clinic in London, said the new variant was also resulting in hospital admissions. This runs against observations so far that the new variant was mostly causing mild symptoms. We need to set on one side the idea that it’s a milder version, he said.
Omicron was first detected in South Africa, and is feared to evade immunity — both from vaccines and prior infections — because of its large mutations. There is yet no conclusive info on how contagious or how severe it could be.
How effective is a booster dose?
Though experts in some countries, including in India, are not sure of how effective booster doses of vaccines will be, UK is going ahead with it. The weekend saw long queues before clinics.
PM Johnson set a new target for all adults in England to be offered a booster by the end of the month.Face masks have been made compulsory in indoor public spaces, and new testing and self-isolation rules for contact cases are in place
